What Is AI Search Visibility (GEO), and Why Should You Care?

A growing share of local searches don't start on Google anymore — they start with a question to ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews: "who's the best excavator near Louisville?" or "recommend a branding agency in Louisville." Instead of scrolling through ten blue links, the person gets two or three specific business names, and that's it. Either you're one of them, or you don't exist in that conversation at all.

This is called Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO — the practice of structuring your online presence so AI tools recognize your business as a trustworthy answer. It builds on traditional SEO but rewards different things: clear, factual content; consistent business information across the web; genuine customer reviews; and a website structured for AI to actually read and understand.

The businesses winning here aren't necessarily the biggest — they're the ones who got structured for this shift early, while most of their local competitors haven't even heard the term yet.
